Happy Earth Day! If you’re an eagle-eyed On Airer, you might’ve noticed the name One Tree Planted plastered on our show pages. But for those new (hello!) and to refresh loyal fans, we are partnered with the incredible global reforestation charity to bring live music and sustainability together.
What does this mean? We plant one leafy tree for every participating live concert stream purchased through the On Air website, mobile, and TV apps, focusing on a long-term effort to reduce the impact of music production and digital streaming on the environment.
If your vibe includes watching your favourite musicians while helping to grow a greener planet, here’s a deep dive into Earth Day and One Tree Planted.
What exactly is Earth Day?
The first Earth Day in 1970 brought together millions of Americans from all walks of life to rally and create the modern environmental movement. Since then, Earth Day has evolved into one of the world’s most conscious events, encouraging 192+ countries to safeguard the planet (from pollution, waste disposal and deforestation) and fight for a brighter future.
Each year, on 22 April, more than a billion people participate in eco-friendly activities, such as litter clean-ups, planting trees, and learning new habits.
Who is One Tree Planted?
One Tree Planted is committed to global reforestation, planting millions of trees each year to help restore nature and biodiversity. Think one of Mother Nature’s best friends, if you will.
The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation also raises awareness of the importance of trees and plants, offers businesses a simple yet effective sustainable solution, and encourages younger generations to play their part in protecting the environment.
Why is reforestation so important?
Trees play a massive part in keeping our planet happy and healthy, especially in reducing the harmful effects of global warming. Scientists even cite reforestation as one of the top solutions to the climate crisis. So, there’s little surprise that One Tree Planted’s initiative aligns perfectly with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The charity works with planting partners in over 70 countries across diverse ecosystems to fund large-scale, high-impact projects – such as restoring forests and creating new habitats for biodiversity – making positive environmental changes accessible for anyone, everywhere.
What has One Tree Planted achieved so far?
One Tree Planted has planted a more-than-respectable 135.5 million trees since 2014 and the number of trees sown continues to double yearly. They’ve also built relationships with 378 partners across 82 countries in North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Pacific.
Who else has worked with One Tree Planted?
Some of the world’s most iconic brands have teamed up with One Tree Planted, including Adidas, L’Oreal, Ford, Microsoft, House of Marley, and Yutaka (to name a few).
In 2022, British pop-rock collective Coldplay planted one tree for every ticket sold on their Music of the Spheres World Tour to help minimise the carbon footprint of touring. The band’s commitment sparked restoration projects in 5 regions: California, Brazil, Romania, Haiti, and the Andes.
Celebrating Earth Day!
For one special (Earth) day, we’re doubling the number of trees planted with every eligible live concert stream purchase, so there’s no better time to treat yourself and the planet!
